Hornby's shallow and apathetic protagonist, Will Freeman, has just made a truly
amazing sexual discovery. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of gorgeous women in London who would love to date him.
Single mothers, after all, have fewer choices of mates. Will joins a club for single parents, creating an imaginary son
named Ned to get himself some sympathy and action. Instead, he winds up meeting a relentless real 12-year-old, Marcus.
This touching and hysterical story of the redemption of a lost adult by a confused adolescent never stumbles on cliche
or convention. While both Will and Marcus are incredibly frustrating characters, you wind up rooting whole-heartedly for
their backwards and dysfunctional friendship.
