Wow. Absolutely and unquestionably awesome! This modest little tale of three young women coming of age in post-World War II Britain is a stunner, a wonder, and a must-read for your list.
At turns bitingly funny and bitterly moving, this is nothing less than a perfectly constructed "easy" read that nonetheless captures emotions and issues of real and lasting importance. We got so attached to the three main characters--aspiring intellectual Hetty Fallowes, wandering refugee Liselotte Klein, and class jumper Una Vane--that we could have happily followed their adventures for another three hundred or so pages. But Gardam is one of those increasingly rare writers who knows how to bring her story to a heart-racing and warmly truthful conclusion. Don't miss this one!
