Dubus the third says he didn't really mean to become an author, to follow in his
famous father's footsteps, but it happened anyway. We're glad it did. Only problem is, he's written a novel with two
equally compelling but equally blinded protagonists who must fight against each other--making it damn near impossible
for the reader to choose sides. Colonel Behrani, a rich and powerful man under the Shah's regime in Iran, is now a
struggling immigrant working three jobs to maintain his family. He's willing to gamble everything he has left to make
the real estate deal of a lifetime on a Californian beachfront property. Due to a government mix-up, the house has been
mistakenly confiscated from Kathy Niccolo, a shy, insecure recovering alcoholic who runs a one-woman cleaning service.
As Kathy fights to maintain her fragile stability and to get back her rightful home, and as Behrani clings to his last
chance to restore a shard of his family's dignity, you find yourself rooting for whoever is speaking. And you may find
it hard to do anything else until you've finished this 1999 National Book Award finalist.
