Ellen's husband David Moore (a very serious sports fan) recommends the books of John Feinstein for any sports junkie in your life. Feinstein's talent lies in his ability to combine an objective appraisal of the sport in question with an intimate look from an insider's view of the individuals and events.
For instance, in A March to Madness, Feinstein follows the Atlantic Coast Conference throughout a season of college basketball on a game-by-game and person-by-person basis; as he analyzes, criticizes, and sympathizes, he reveals more than most of us could ever see merely watching from the cheap seats. The access that players and coaches give him to their thoughts and motivations turns reporting into fascinating narrative. If college basketball isn't your sports fan's thing, it's not to hard to find Feinstein book that will enthrall to the finish. For golf, for example, consider A Good Walk Spoiled or The Majors, or for college football, pick up A Civil War.
