Hear that? It's the buzz surrounding Alexander McCall Smith's series of African novels (recently reissued in paperback from Anchor Books) about a most unlikely heroine: Precious Ramotswe, the plucky Botswanan lady detective with a heart of gold.
The first in the series, this novel is perfect reading when you want something on the lighter side. We'll let Dorothy, one of GBL's "circle of readers," describe her experience with another novel in the series, Tears of the Giraffe: "As I read, I was rather unsuspectedly drawn into the life and influence of Mma Ramotswe of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
I found I was falling in love with her and the other people in her life, and I also discovered 'the detective-solves-mystery' was of relatively little consequence. This is a novel that explores morality in changing societies and how people are coping (or not) with these changes. It is a novel of Africa. And it is a novel of everyday life everywhere. This book, so simply written, has the essence of Haiku poetry.
What a wonderful surprise and wonderful gift the Tears of the Giraffe was! I am very glad to have met Mma Ramotswe and all of the people in her life, and I know that the lessons she has taught me will not be forgotten any time soon."
And here's the coolest part: the author is very fond of emailing his readers. If you read McCall Smith's books and would like to chat with him, just email us, and we'll be happy to put you in touch!
