The Poisonwood Bible
Barbara Kingsolver. Harperperennial Library: 1999 (paperback). ISBN: 0060930535. 556 pages.
Kingsolver takes on both a new continent and a new kind of novel in her most
recent work. This book about an American missionary family's experiences in the Belgian Congo is an ambitious epic in style,
size, and substance. A quick look at the bibliography reveals how thoroughly Kingsolver sought to familiarize herself with
African natural and political history and with the tradition of the postcolonial novel set in Africa. In essence, a crazy
white man takes his wife and four daughters into what he sees as the heart of darkness, expecting to lead the natives to
the light. As you might guess, the Price family is in for a big surprise, but so might you be when you see how Kingsolver
has set this family drama against the towering backdrop of the Congo's fight for independence and autonomy. A finalist for
the 1999 PEN/Faulkner Award.
